Community Alert Network (CAN)

Community Alert Network

The Community Alert Network (CAN) is a computerized emergency notification system. The network, when activated by fire or police officials, calls your phone number and delivers a recorded message explaining the emergency and instructions for you and your family.

The emergency could be a possible or actual chemical release, sewer mishap, civil unrest or anything else that threatens your home or family. The computer will make three attempts to deliver the message.

During the Chevron fire in January 1996, 2,900 calls were placed to CAN to inform concerned residents that a fire had occurred, no release of hazardous materials was anticipated and an evacuation was not required at that time.

The fire was controlled and the CAN system called back with an "all-clear, emergency over" message.

If you have a listed telephone number (with address) you are automatically included in the CAN system. If your telephone or address is not listed, you must provide this information to the Manhattan Beach Fire Department for inclusion in the network.

The address is needed because some emergencies may only effect one area of the community. All information is kept confidential.
